Y-90 Radioembolization in Lucknow | Targeted Liver Cancer Treatment – I D Cancer Centre

Y-90 Radioembolization, also known as Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT), is a highly specialized and minimally invasive treatment used for liver cancers. It combines the power of radiation therapy with the precision of interventional radiology, delivering treatment directly inside the tumor while protecting healthy tissues.

What Is Y-90 Radioembolization?

Y-90 Radioembolization involves delivering microscopic radioactive beads, containing the isotope Yttrium-90, directly into the blood vessels feeding a liver tumor.
Once inside, these beads lodge in the tumor and release targeted radiation, destroying cancer cells from within.

This approach ensures:

  • High radiation dose to the tumor

  • Minimal exposure to healthy liver

  • Fewer side effects compared to external radiation or chemotherapy

Who Needs Y-90 Radioembolization?

Your doctor may recommend Y-90 for:

  • Primary liver cancers (Hepatocellular carcinoma – HCC)

  • Metastatic liver tumors
(from colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, breast cancer, etc.)

  • Patients who cannot undergo surgery

  • Patients who did not respond to chemotherapy

  • Patients needing tumor shrinkage before surgery or transplant

How Y-90 Treatment Works

Step 1: Mapping Angiogram

A special scan is done to map liver blood vessels and ensure safe delivery.

Step 2: Y-90 Microsphere Delivery

Microscopic radioactive beads are injected through a catheter into the artery supplying the tumor.

Step 3: Tumor-Focused Radiation

The beads emit radiation for about 2 weeks, shrinking and destroying tumor cells.

Step 4: Follow-up Imaging

Scans monitor tumor response and liver function.

Benefits of Y-90 Radioembolization

  • 🎯 Highly targeted – radiation goes only to the tumor

  • 🛡️ Protects normal liver tissue

  • ⚡ Fewer side effects compared to systemic therapy

  • 🤏 Minimally invasive (no major surgery)

  • 📉 Reduces tumor size, helps control symptoms

  • 💪 May improve survival and quality of life

  • 🏥 Performed as a day-care or short-stay procedure

Common Side Effects

Most people tolerate Y-90 treatment well. Possible mild effects include:

  • Fatigue

  • Low-grade fever

  • Mild abdominal discomfort

  • Temporary nausea
