Understanding Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Diagnosis, Treatment & Support
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of head and neck cancer that begins in the nasopharynx—the upper part of the throat located behind the nose. Though relatively uncommon, it requires specialized diagnosis and precision-focused treatment, particularly because of its sensitive location near critical structures such as the brainstem and cranial nerves.
At I D Cancer Center, we combine advanced imaging, modern radiotherapy systems, and evidence-based treatment protocols to deliver accurate and effective care for patients with NPC.
Risk Factors
Understanding risk factors helps in early detection and prevention:
Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) infection
Genetic predisposition or family history
Diet high in salted or preserved foods
Smoking and alcohol consumption
Exposure to industrial fumes or dust
Male gender and age between 30–60 years
Common Symptoms
NPC often presents with symptoms that may appear unrelated to the nose or throat. Common signs include:
Persistent nasal congestion or blockage
Nosebleeds
Hearing loss or blocked ear sensation
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Neck swelling due to enlarged lymph nodes
Headache or facial pain
Double vision or visual disturbances
Difficulty opening the mouth (trismus)
If you experience these symptoms for more than two weeks, immediate evaluation is recommended.
Diagnostic Services at I D Cancer Center
We use a comprehensive diagnostic approach to ensure accurate staging and personalized treatment:
Nasopharyngoscopy (endoscopic evaluation)
Biopsy for histopathological confirmation
MRI/CT scans to assess local spread
PET-CT to evaluate regional and distant disease
EBV DNA testing (when indicated)
Audiometry to assess hearing baselines before treatment
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the stage, patient condition, and tumor characteristics. At I D Cancer Center, all treatment plans are discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor board for optimal outcomes.
1. Radiation Therapy – Primary Treatment
NPC is highly sensitive to radiation. We offer:
IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy)
IGRT (Image-Guided Radiotherapy)
VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy)
Adaptive Radiotherapy for anatomical changes during treatment
These advanced technologies allow precise targeting of the tumor while protecting vital structures like salivary glands, spinal cord, optic nerves, and brainstem.
2. Concurrent Chemoradiation
Chemotherapy is often given alongside radiation to improve tumor response. Common regimens include:
Cisplatin-based concurrent chemotherapy
Adjuvant (post-radiation) chemotherapy in selected cases
3. Induction Chemotherapy
Used in locally advanced stages to shrink the tumor before starting chemoradiation.
4. Immunotherapy
For recurrent or metastatic disease, FDA-approved immunotherapy agents can be used based on molecular profiling and clinical suitability.
