Multiple Myeloma Treatment | I D Cancer Center Lucknow

Overview

Multiple Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells, a form of white blood cells found in the bone marrow. These abnormal plasma cells multiply uncontrollably, produce abnormal proteins, weaken bones, reduce immunity, and affect kidney function.

Although chronic in nature, multiple myeloma is highly treatable with modern therapies.
At I D Cancer Center, we provide advanced diagnostics, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and precision radiotherapy, supported by a multidisciplinary cancer care team.

What Causes Multiple Myeloma?

The exact cause is unknown, but it is associated with:

  • Genetic mutations

  • Increasing age (most patients are over 55 years)

  • Family history of blood cancers

  • Obesity

  • Exposure to radiation or certain chemicals

  • Pre-existing plasma cell disorders (MGUS, Smoldering Myeloma)

Multiple myeloma is not contagious.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the stage and severity.

Bone Symptoms

  • Persistent back pain

  • Rib or hip pain

  • Bone fractures with minimal injury

  • Spinal compression

The “CRAB” criteria help identify active myeloma:

R – Renal (kidney) problems
A – Anemia
B – Bone lesions

Diagnosis at I D Cancer Center

We conduct comprehensive investigations for accurate diagnosis and staging.

  • Complete blood tests (CBC, calcium, creatinine)

  • Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP)

  • Free light chain assay

  • Bone marrow biopsy

  • Immunofixation

  • PET-CT scan / Whole body MRI

  • X-rays or CT for bone lesions

These tests help assess the disease burden and guide treatment decisions.

Treatment Options

1. Chemotherapy

Used to control abnormal plasma cells.

2. Targeted Therapy

Highly effective in modern myeloma treatment:

Stimulates the immune system to attack cancer cells.
Includes:

  • Daratumumab

  • Elotuzumab

  • Checkpoint inhibitors (selected cases)

4. Steroid Therapy

Essential part of treatment to control cell growth.

Autologous stem cell transplantation can improve long-term survival.
