Overview

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, a thin protective lining covering the lungs, abdomen, heart, and testes.
The most common type is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs.

Types of Mesothelioma

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma

Causes & Risk Factors

The primary cause is asbestos exposure, usually through occupations such as construction, mining, insulation work, shipbuilding, and automotive industries.

Risk factors include:

  • Long-term asbestos exposure

  • Living with someone who works around asbestos

  • Age 50+

  • Male gender

  • Smoking (increases risk of complications but not directly the cancer)

  • Radiation exposure (rare cause)

Symptoms depend on the area affected.

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms
