Medulloblastoma Treatment for Children | I D Cancer Center

Overview

Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in children, although it can also occur in adults. It arises in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance, coordination, and movement.
Because medulloblastoma can grow quickly and spread through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential.

At I D Cancer Center, our multidisciplinary pediatric neuro-oncology team provides comprehensive evaluation, precision radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and long-term support for children and families facing this diagnosis.

Who Is Affected?

  • Most commonly affects children between 3 to 16 years

  • Can rarely occur in adults

  • More common in boys

Medulloblastoma is not inherited in most cases and cannot spread from child to child.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms often result from increased pressure in the brain or involvement of the cerebellum:

General Symptoms

  • Headache, especially in the morning

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Irritability or tiredness

  • Balance problems or unsteady walking

  • Difficulty with coordination

  • Blurred vision or double vision

Advanced Symptoms

  • Seizures

  • Stiff neck

  • Weakness in arms or legs

  • Behavioral changes

Any persistent neurological symptoms warrant immediate medical evaluation.

Diagnosis at I D Cancer Center

Precise diagnosis helps in planning the most effective treatment.

We provide:

  • MRI Brain and Spine (standard for medulloblastoma evaluation)

  • CT scan (emergency assessment)

  • Lumbar puncture to check for CSF spread

  • Neurosurgical biopsy or tumor removal for confirmation

  • Molecular Subtyping: WNT, SHH, Group 3, Group 4 — important for prognosis

  • PET-CT (selected cases)

Our team collaborates with expert neurosurgeons for accurate surgical evaluation and safe tissue diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored based on age, risk category, tumor spread, and molecular subtype.

1. Surgery

The first step in treatment usually involves removing as much of the tumor as safely possible.

  • Complete or near-complete removal improves outcomes

  • Performed by pediatric neurosurgeons

2. Radiation Therapy

After surgery, radiation therapy plays a crucial role, especially for children above 3 years.
At I D Cancer Center, we deliver:

  • Craniospinal Irradiation (CSI) using IMRT/VMAT

  • Boost to tumor bed using IGRT

  • Highly precise planning to protect the heart, lungs, thyroid, and healthy brain tissue

Modern techniques ensure maximum tumor control with minimum side effects.

3. Chemotherapy

Essential in both standard-risk and high-risk medulloblastoma:

  • Helps kill remaining cancer cells

  • Reduces risk of recurrence

  • Administered in child-friendly daycare settings

4. Targeted Therapy / Immunotherapy

Used in select molecular subtypes or recurrent disease, depending on genetic markers.

5. Rehabilitation & Supportive Care

  • Physiotherapy for balance and coordination

  • Vision and hearing assessment

  • Nutritional support

  • Psychological and school-readiness counseling

Our supportive approach ensures holistic recovery for each child.

Long-Term Monitoring & Survivorship

Children treated for medulloblastoma require long-term follow-up.
We provide:

  • Regular MRI scans

  • Hearing and vision checks

  • Growth and hormonal monitoring

  • Neurocognitive support

  • Learning and school rehabilitation programs

  • Guidance for healthy lifestyle and emotional well-being

At I D Cancer Center, we support families from diagnosis to long-term care, ensuring every child has the best possible quality of life.
