Male Breast Cancer Treatment | I D Cancer Center Lucknow

Overview

Although breast cancer is commonly associated with women, men can also develop breast cancer. While rare, male breast cancer often gets diagnosed late because many men do not realize they can be affected.
At I D Cancer Center, we prioritize awareness, early detection, accurate diagnosis, and personalized treatment, ensuring every patient receives world-class care in a supportive environment.

What Is Male Breast Cancer?

Male breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast tissue grow uncontrollably.
Most cases develop in:

  • Ductal cells (most common – ductal carcinoma)

  • Nipple/areola region

  • Behind the chest wall

Early diagnosis significantly improves treatment success.

Risk Factors

Certain factors may increase the risk of male breast cancer:

  • Advancing age (most common in men 50+ years)

  • Family history of breast cancer

  • BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic mutations

  • Radiation exposure to the chest

  • High estrogen levels (due to liver disease, obesity, hormonal imbalance)

  • Klinefelter syndrome

  • Chronic testicular conditions

Men with a strong family history may benefit from genetic counselling and screening.

Common Symptoms

Men should seek medical attention if they notice:

  • painless lump behind the nipple or in breast tissue

  • Nipple retraction or ulceration

  • Discharge from the nipple (clear or bloody)

  • Redness or scaling of the nipple/areola

  • Swelling or thickening of breast tissue

  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the underarm

Any persistent breast change should be evaluated.

Diagnosis at I D Cancer Center

Early and accurate diagnosis is critical. We use advanced diagnostic tools including:

  • Clinical examination

  • Mammography & breast ultrasound

  • MRI breast (selected cases)

  • Biopsy for confirmation (FNAC or core needle biopsy)

  • Hormone receptor testing (ER/PR, HER2 status)

  • Genetic testing (BRCA mutation)

  • PET-CT for staging, when required

Our tumour board reviews every case to determine the best treatment plan.

Treatment Options

Treatment is personalized based on cancer stage, tumour type, hormonal status, and overall health.

1. Surgery

The primary treatment for most men:

  • Modified Radical Mastectomy

  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy

  • Axillary lymph node dissection (if needed)

2. Radiation Therapy

Provides excellent control after surgery, especially when lymph nodes are involved or margins are close.
I D Cancer Center offers:

  • IMRT

  • IGRT

  • VMAT
These technologies reduce side effects and protect the heart and lungs.

3. Chemotherapy

Used based on stage, lymph node involvement, and tumour characteristics.

4. Hormone Therapy

Most male breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive, making hormonal therapy very effective.
Common therapies include Tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors.

5. Targeted Therapy

For HER2-positive cancers, we offer advanced targeted drugs such as Trastuzumab.

6. Immunotherapy

Considered for selected advanced cases based on tumour markers.
